Why does Beeper need to be verified?

Beeper uses end-to-end encryption and device verification to protect your account and keep your chats private. When you log into Beeper on a device for the first time, the app asks you to verify that device before it can send or receive messages securely. This protects your account from unauthorized access:

  • If a session isn’t verified, messages may appear encrypted and fail to decrypt.
  • Sending and receiving messages via Beeper to your chat network accounts depend on this verification step to work properly.

Verification is per device/session — which means every Beeper app or sign-in instance needs to be verified before it can fully sync your chats and encryption keys.

⚠️ Security note: Beeper does not keep a copy of your sensitive keys or recovery codes. That’s why verification and your Recovery Code are both essential to accessing your encrypted messages safely.

How can I verify my login on Beeper?

You can verify your login on Beeper using one of two methods depending on what you have available:

1. Emoji (Cross-Device) Verification

Use this method if you already have another device where Beeper is verified and working.

  1. After signing in on the new device, you’ll be prompted to verify your new login in your verified device.
  2. On your already-verified device, click ‘Accept’ and follow the prompt to confirm the login by matching emojis — this proves the two devices belong to the same account.

This is the easiest way if you do have another verified Beeper device available.

2. Recovery Code Verification

If you don’t have another verified device, or simply can’t use Emoji Verification, you can verify using your Recovery Code:

  1. After signing in with your email and the login code sent to you, you’ll reach a verification prompt.
  2. Choose to use your Recovery Code instead of using emoji verification.
  3. Enter the Recovery Code exactly as you saved it.

You will then be verified and your messages will sync as normal.

What if I don’t have another device to verify with?

If you only have one device, you must use your Recovery Code to verify your login — there’s no alternative cross-device verification in that case. Without it, you won’t be able to complete setup and access your encrypted messages, because Beeper needs proof that you are the rightful owner of the account.

If you reach this point and are stuck without a Recovery Code, see the next section below.

I lost my Recovery Code — what now?

Your Recovery Code is critical and Beeper cannot retrieve it for you. It’s part of how your encryption key is stored — only you should ever have access to it, and for security reasons Beeper doesn’t keep a copy.

Can I get it back?

No — lost Recovery Codes can’t be restored. If you can’t find it in your notes or password manager:

On Android, check Google Password Manager or your password vault app.

On iOS, check the Passwords app on iOS, or Keychain Access on Mac (if ‘Sync this iPhone’ is enabled in your iCloud settings).

Can I generate a new one?

Yes, you can reset your Recovery Code. Doing this will create a brand new recovery key for your account and disconnect all previously connected chat networks. This means that chat history tied to the old code is no longer accessible in your account. Depending on the network, some history can be backfilled after connecting them back to Beeper. Check out this page for what we can backfill what'll have to start from scratch: Chat History Backfill Capabilities

You only need to reset it on one platform (Desktop, iOS, or Android). Once reset, you must sign out and sign back in on your other devices and verify using the new code.

Quick Tips

  • Store your Recovery Code securely (password manager, secure notes, etc.) — Beeper won’t keep it for you.
  • If you see encrypted messages or errors about unverified devices, verifying using your Recovery Code usually resolves them.
  • Even if you have another verified device, using your Recovery Code is still a valid verification method.
