Purpose

The purpose of this article is to help users that have also lost their Recovery Code (previously named Security Key).

Message History Will Be Lost For Some Networks

By resetting your Recovery Code your message history will be lost for Instagram, iMessage, Google Chat, Linkedin, Signal and Discord

Step by Step Guide

  1. If you are not logged into a Beeper desktop app, please log in and then skip all prompts to verify your app with the Recovery Code or other Beeper apps.
  2. Export room keys to a file via the top left gear menu → Settings → Security & Privacy → Export E2E room keys.
  3. Reset Secure Backup
    .
  4. Reset cross-signing keys (this will prompt you for a recovery code, it's expecting the new one you just made in step 3).
    Select > Clear cross-signing keys
  5. We recommend signing out of all your other Beeper apps and using this new desktop app to verify those apps when you sign back into them
  6. User’s may also be prompted for their password.  If they do not have a password (email login only user) they need to sign out and back in and then resume the process.
  7. On other sessions, you should be able to either verify the new session and receive new keys or go to Settings and "setup" Secure Backup (green button instead of the red "reset"), which may be prompt for the new Recovery Code as part of downloading your keys.

Existing Chat Networks

If you had chat networks set up during this process you will have to delete and set them up again in order to be able to successfully send and receive messages.
