How can I generate a new Recovery Code?

Why am I seeing a reminder to check my recovery key?

Beeper occasionally checks that you still have access to your Recovery Code (called Recovery Key in the app). The reminder appears on devices that don't have the key stored, even if that device is already verified. If you dismiss it, it will come back in a week.

What is a Recovery Code?

Your Recovery Code is like the key to your encrypted chat history on Beeper. Without it, you can’t unlock or access your old messages. It’s part of how Beeper keeps your data safe — only you can read your messages. In the Beeper app, it’s called your Recovery Key.

Where your Recovery Code might be

Beeper showed you your Recovery Code when you created your account. Check:

• Google Password Manager: search for “Beeper” (it may show as Beeper: Universal Chat). The username is your email and the password is your Recovery Code. See how to find it.
• Apple Passwords (iPhone, iPad or Mac) or Keychain Access (Mac).
• Any other password manager, note or document where you might have pasted it.

A real Recovery Code is 12 groups of 4 letters and numbers.

Settings > Profile > Show Recovery Key only appears on a device that has the key stored, so you may not see it on any of your devices.

Can't find your Recovery Code?

Nobody, including Beeper, can recover your Recovery Code. You don't have to reset it right away. You can keep using Beeper as you are: your signed-in devices keep working, and the reminder will keep appearing weekly.

The risk is that if you're ever signed out of every device, resetting will be the only way back in.

A new Recovery Code can only be created by resetting during sign-in (sign out → sign back in → “Lost your recovery key?” → Reset Recovery Key). Before you reset, keep in mind:

• You'll need to reconnect every chat account. Some networks treat this as a new login, and Facebook and Instagram may respond with security checks or temporary lockouts.
• Your message history in Beeper is lost. How much comes back depends on each network's backfill (see below).

If you decide to reset, follow the steps for your app below.

What You Need to Know:

Resetting your Recovery Code will:

• Log you out of all chat networks in Beeper.
• Require you to reconnect each chat network account.
• Some networks may flag the new login. Facebook and Instagram in particular may ask for extra security checks.
• Message history may be lost depending on our ability to backfill your chat history for each specific chat network. Beeper's backfill capabilities are outlined here.
  • ✅ Recoverable history (after reconnecting): Facebook (Except E2EE Chats), WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Messages, Signal (if message history transfer is enabled)
  • ❌ Not recoverable: Instagram, Google Chat, LinkedIn, Discord, old Beeper (Matrix) messages.

Your Recovery Code is tied to your Beeper account, not a specific device. As such, you only need to reset it in one Beeper app (Desktop, Android, or iOS), not in each of them. 

How to reset your recovery code:

💻 Beeper Desktop

1. Install the latest version of the Beeper Desktop app: beeper.com/download 
2. Open the app and enter your Beeper-linked email address.
3. Enter the 6-digit verification code sent to your email.
4. When asked to verify:
   1. If you have your old Recovery Code, enter it.
   2. If not, click "Lost your Recovery Code?"
5. Click "Reset Recovery Key". This removes all of your connected chat networks and provides you with a new recovery code.
6. It should take you to the next page where you'll see your new Recovery Code. Make sure to save your Recovery Code by either choosing ‘Save Key in Password Manager’ or ‘Backup Manually’. 
   1. 🍎  For Mac users:
      • Choosing ‘Save Key in Password Manager’ will save it to your Passwords app. Make sure to go through the complete process and save the code as Beeper will let you proceed to the next page whether or not you save it successfully.
      • On MacOS, it also gets saved to your iCloud Keychain by default (your can find it using Keychain Access). We recommend using a password manager to store it if planning to store outside of iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager
7. Connect one chat network account and you should be taken to the inbox afterwards.

   

8. Once you're logged in, you can view your new recovery code by going to Settings > click on your profile > click on the dropdown arrow on the top right and select ‘Show Recovery Key’

📱 Beeper iOS

1. Open the Beeper iOS app and log in with your email.
2. Enter the 6-digit code sent to your email.
3. Once you're taken to the ‘Enter Recovery Code’ screen, select “Lost your Recovery Key?”
4. You will be asked to confirm ‘Reset encryption keys?’. Tap ‘Confirm’.
5. The app will then set up your encryption again and take you straight to Settings > Accounts, where you can connect your chat accounts again 
6. To view your new recovery code, you can go to Settings > click on your profile > Show Recovery Code. You can save this code manually or save it to your Passwords app (recommended!) for easy storage.

🤖 Beeper Android

1. Open Beeper and sign in using your email and enter the 6-digit code you receive via email
2. When asked to verify, tap "Try Another Way" > then tap "Lost your Recovery Key?"
3. Tap "Reset" to confirm. 
4. You will be prompted to save your Recovery Code to Google Password Manager. We strongly recommend saving it there or in another password management app.
5. You will then be taken straight to Connect Chat Accounts where you can reconnect your chat networks.
6. As soon as you connect one chat network account, you'll be able to access the rest of the app.
7. To view your Recovery Code, you can go to Settings > Profile > tap on the three dot icon on the top right > Show Recovery Key

FAQs:

1. Can I retrieve my recovery code from another Beeper app I'm still logged in to? 
   Only if that device has the key stored. If it does, go to Settings > Profile > Show Recovery Key and save the code somewhere safe. If you don't see that option, the code can't be recovered, but you don't need to reset right away. Your signed-in devices will keep working and the reminder will keep appearing weekly. The only risk is that if you're ever signed out of every device, resetting will be the only way back in, so you can reset whenever it suits you.
    
2. I'm seeing “Encrypted Message” in my chats. How can I fix this?
   After resetting, make sure to log out of all Beeper devices and log back in, then verify your login using the new recovery code.
   When you reset your Recovery Code in one Beeper app, it creates a new encryption key for your account. If you’re still logged into Beeper on other devices using the old code, those apps will keep using that outdated key. That outdated key will not work when decrypting messages sent and received in your chat network accounts, since your chat networks are now linked to the new code. Instead, they will show up as "encrypted message" on those devices until you sign out and log back in with the updated Recovery Code.
    
3. I'm seeing an error when entering my new code
   We recommend double checking the code you're entering (especially if entering manually) as it is case-sensitive. If you're sure that you have the right code, you can Contact Support or submit a bug report by pressing on the bug icon on the top right of your app (iOS, Android) or selecting the dropdown arrow on the top right > Report a Problem on Beeper desktop.
    
4. Can I reset my Recovery Code while staying logged in, without losing my Chat Networks?
   No. Resetting your Beeper Recovery Code logs you out of all chat networks in Beeper; you'll need to reconnect each one afterward. Whether your chat history comes back depends on that network's backfill support. See the full breakdown: Chat History Import
    
5. What happens to my old Beeper/Matrix messages after I reset my Recovery Code?
   They're not deleted, but they won't be accessible either. Old messages in your Beeper/Matrix Space stay linked to your previous Recovery Code, so they remain encrypted and locked once you reset. Any new Beeper/Matrix messages sent or received after the reset will be readable normally, since they're tied to your new Recovery Code.
